Major IMO-industry alliance broadens scope of action to cut ship emissions

A key IMO initiative ship decarbonization - the Global Industry Alliance (GIA) to Support Low Carbon Shipping - will intensify its work on the ship-port interface to reduce emissions from ships. This is one of the outcomes of a GIA task force meeting. During the meeting, the IMO Secretariat discussed progress on a number of ongoing projects and set tangible goals for GIA up to 2023. Participants agreed to continue work under the existing workstreams, including alternative fuels and validating the performance of energy efficiency technologies, and to expand these even further. BIMCO: The crash of the bunker market and post-IMO 2020 reality

The collapse of the oil market has seen prices of marine fuels compliant with the IMO 2020 sulphur regulation dwindle providing some ease for shipowners in the unprecedented economic crash. BIMCO’s data shows that simultaneous supply and demand shocks have sent bunker prices racing towards previous low levels with very low-sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) trading at USD 246 per MT on 5 May 2020 in Singapore. The current upheaval has collapsed marine gas oil low-sulphur (MGO LS) prices at the fastest pace in recent memory, even exceeding the demise of the Great Financial Crisis and oil crash in 2014. 20% of BWMS fail to meet D-2 requirements during commissioning testing

Commissioning testing of BWMS is not yet compulsory but even the most carefully selected BWMS can fail to meet D-2 requirements if there is a breakdown in communication in the installation phase. Albion Marine has been busy helping Shipowners with issues regarding BWMS operations. Pre-commissioning, commissioning, BWTS troubleshooting and health checks, crew training , and BWMP updates are part of our standard services. Riviera

Cylinder lubrication must adapt to a multi-fuel reality

The impending accelaration of decarbonization efforts to Meer the IMO's 2050 targets is expected also to speed up the development of new more environmentally-friendly engine designs. Aside from the very low sulphur fuels, engines of the future are expected to be powered by a number of alternative fuels as well including methanol, LPG, biofuels and even ammonia. However, for the switch from high sulphur fuel oil to fuels of the future to run smoothly, ships' engines have to run smoothly as well. And the key to having all engine cylinders running is efficient cylinder lubrication. More information: Offshore Energy
