New Fishing Vessel Safety Publication Launched

Joining forces to shape the fishery sector of tomorrow is the newly launched publication prepared by IMO, ILO and FAO. The new brochure will help promote safe and decent work in fisheries through the application of international standards. The publication provides an overview of the four main international binding fisheries conventions/agreements that promote the safety of fishing vessels, safety of fishers, training of fishers, and responsible and safe fisheries operations. Guidance for policy and decision-makers in the fisheries, maritime, and labour sectors is also provided with a view to encourage the ratification and implementation of the above-mentioned fisheries instruments. As fishing remains one of the most dangerous professions in the world, the sector needs to change to become more sustainable. This publication aims to support governments in achieving their commitments towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8: Promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all; and SDG 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

A mapping of zero emission projects underway in shipping has launched

Getting to Zero Coalition announced plans for a new mapping of zero emission pilots and demonstration projects, revealing the scale and breadth of projects already underway in the maritime sector’s path to decarbonization. The impetus for the mapping came from discussions within the First Movers workstream of the Getting to Zero Coalition, where industry leaders noted the increased number of announcements of zero emission demonstration projects in maritime media. This comes as zero emission fuels and technologies for maritime shipping need to be commercially viable by 2030 to meet decarbonization targets in line with IMO. So far, the Getting to Zero Coalition, which set this goal in 2019, has done a mapping of various projects, showing that there are already numerous zero emission pilots and demonstration projects underway in shipping. California Approves Regulation to Further Cut Emissions in Ports

With the support of Transport Canada, Albion Marine Solutions is working on the development of an innovative Advanced Air Emissions Abatement Technology for ocean-going vessels. Phase 1 of the multi-year project has been successfully completed. It involved a detailed survey of the existing environmental scenario at five of the largest ports in Canada. Albion’s dedicated environmental engineering team was also involved with interactive discussions with the port authorities. This adaptable technology solution intends to reduce the actual air emissions across Canadian ports. Albion is confident of improving the general air quality near ports much more than current standards by targeting capturing of near cent percentages of SOx, NOx, Particulate matter (PM2.5 & PM10) emitted from the vessels. OCIMF COVID-19 Update

OCIMF has now included a remote vessel inspection option as a temporary tool within both the Ship Inspection Report Programme and the Offshore Vessel Inspection Database. Supporting guidance issued by OCIMF on the use of remote inspections for both inspection programmes advises that the remote vessel inspection option should be used as an additional option to enhance data collection where physical inspections are not possible due to COVID-19. Albion Marine Solutions provides Drone Survey Services. There are many advantages of using drones:

• Reducing risk

• Savings

• Increased safety through increased inspections.

• Better records.
