ABS: Future fuels will require new seafarer training

The head of the American Bureau of Shipping has called for universal crew training standards for LNG-fueled vessels. These fuels have historically been handled only by crewmembers on specialized vessels but as dynamic fuels become more common in the merchant fleet, all seafarers will likely need to be trained to handle them. Albion Marine offers services for LNG vessels and crew, we specialize in:

- Feasibility studies, engineering design and complete conversion, work for operation on future fuels

Collaborating to reduce GHG emissions from ports and ships

A new strategic partnership to strengthen cooperation between ships and ports to reduce greenhouse gas emissions has been signed by the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) and the GreenVoyage2050 Project, which is executed by IMO. The partnership will result in collaboration to jointly deliver technical cooperation and capacity-building activities to support implementation of an IMO resolution (MEPC.323(74)) which encourages voluntary cooperation between ships and ports to cut GHG emissions. The partnership with GreenVoyage2050 seeks to support countries even further, through the development of additional tools for ports to become cleaner and greener. The overall aim of the partnership is to demonstrate how efforts in the port can support overall reductions in emissions from shipping and help achieve the goals of the Initial IMO Strategy on the reduction of GHG emissions from ships. While recognizing that there is currently no restart date, the framework, however was shared with the UK government to lay the foundation for a safe resumption of cruising when the time is right and public health conditions allow. The framework documents provide specific guidance in separate documents for cruise operators, passengers, and seafarers. The documents explore the changes required to cruising as well as managing the process from staffing and preparation to passenger communications and operations. Read more: Maritime Executive
