Improving the efficiency of shipping

IMO’S Facilitation Committee addresses the efficiency of shipping by dealing with all matters related to the facilitation of international maritime traffic. The committee is meeting for it’s 43rd session, coinciding with the entry into effect of new requires for all public authorities to introduce electronic exchange of information between ships and ports. The Committee is expected to work on harmonization and develop Guidelines for setting up a single window system in maritime transport. More Information

IMO 2020 Stability and Compatibility Headaches

2020 will be a mess from fuel oil stability and compatibility point of view. 2020 is clearly price-driven, so the temptation to “cut corners” is great, meaning a set of highly variable number of blend components to manufacture the fuel oil will open a “Pandora’s Box” of large number of complex and questionable formulations. Obscurity remains regarding 2020 non-available situations

According to IBIA a standard IMO format for reporting non-availability complaint fuel oil has been developed, as well as guidance for how much reports should be investigated by authorities. However, there is no resolution yet about how to deal with any bunkers that are over the 0.50% sulphur limit, which remain on board a ship when the carriage ban takes effect. Many number states emphasize that it must be debunker at the first port of call, but IBIA claims that in reality this may not always be possible. More information.
