Scenario modelling shows possible decarbonization pathways

DNV GL’s Maritime Forecast to 2050 aims to assist shipowners in choosing the right fuel and technology options for next-generation ships. It sets out three decarbonization pathways for shipping and explores detailed energy mix and fleet composition scenarios, demand growth and regulatory options. Albion Marine specializes in:

Collaborating to reduce GHG emissions from ports and ships

A new strategic partnership to strengthen cooperation between ships and ports to reduce greenhouse gas emissions has been signed by the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) and the GreenVoyage2050 Project, which is executed by IMO. The partnership will result in collaboration to jointly deliver technical cooperation and capacity-building activities to support implementation of an IMO resolution (MEPC.323(74)) which encourages voluntary cooperation between ships and ports to cut GHG emissions. The partnership with GreenVoyage2050 seeks to support countries even further, through the development of additional tools for ports to become cleaner and greener. The overall aim of the partnership is to demonstrate how efforts in the port can support overall reductions in emissions from shipping and help achieve the goals of the Initial IMO Strategy on the reduction of GHG emissions from ships. Ports Declare Ban on EGCS Discharges

Following the use of scrubbers issue which has split the shipping industry, the North P&I Club issued an update on the stands taken by the international ports on the use of scrubbers and the allowance of EGCS discharge. A number of ports and regions have already stated that they will not allow the discharge of washwater from scrubbers. Based on the previous list (https://safety4sea.com/scrubber-discharges-bans-update/), North updated the positions taken by ports that have or will prohibit the use of scrubbers, or have placed conditions on their use. In fact, the countries that have been added to the list are the following: Argentina, Brazil, India and Oman. More information: Safety4Sea

Electric Opportunities for North American Ferries

The environmental and opex benefits of energy storage are driving more North American owners to opt for all-electric propulsion for their coastal passenger vessels. Developments in battery technologies, energy management systems and shore power charging, however, are making ‘ditch the diesel’ decisions a lot easier in certain harbour and coastal vessel applications. That is the case for two new all-electric tour boats built for US-based Maid of the Mist, which sails scenic cruises to the base of Niagara Falls. Using the power of Niagara Falls itself to propel the vessels, the all-electric boats, James V. Glynn and Nikola Tesla, will recharge shoreside each time they dock to load and offload passengers. Recharging to 80% capacity takes about seven minutes, with all of the renewable electricity generated by the Falls – one of the largest sources of hydropower in North America. These true zero-emission passenger vessels – the first newbuilds of their kind in the US – are each powered by a pair of battery packs with a total of 316 kWh, split between two catamaran hulls. This creates two independent power systems providing full redundancy. Read More: Riviera News
