The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority released the 2019 mid-year cargo statistics for goods and passengers moving through the Port of Vancouver. Between January 1 and June 30, 2019, overall cargo through the port increased 0.5% to a record 72.5 million metric tonnes (MMT) over the same time last year, with new mid-year records in containers, potash, grain and cruise passengers. UNCTAD has released its liner shipping connectivity index (LSCI) for 2019, showing China retains its lead as the country best connected to others by sea, the index shows. The country’s LSCI has increased by 51% since 2006. At the other end, small islands developing states have hardly seen any improvement, and trade in shipped goods remains problematic.

Common themes ran through discussion with terminal operators for this year’s update, none more so than efforts to increase capacities through modernization and operational efficiencies. Aside from the sensible business case made for increasing capacity, gains are also being seen in lowering carbon footprints. But challenges abound. Cumbersome, often “fractures” permitting processes that take years to complete was, by far, the biggest issue for all.
