Exhaust Gas cleaning is an effective and mature industrial technology with more than 20 scrubbers manufacturers in the business. The decision to install scrubbers’ today will come with a fancy price tag but it will also mean lower cost of compliance when the limit is enforced. However, amidst of all uncertainties, many shipowners are considering meeting the regulations with the compliant fuel. This choice is associated with lower investment cost but has some technical and commercial challenges to make it a viable long term solution. The existing Fuel Oil System needs to be upgraded to handle low viscous compliant oil with some factors of redundancy to store different grade of oils as the fuel market, at the time of writing this, is expected to be very uncertain post implementation. Fuel is the lifeblood of the shipping industry and is fundamental to almost every aspect of propulsion. So, when there is a change to the fuels picture, it has a knock-on effect for all other aspects of operation. From 1 January 2020, shipping will see huge changes in its use of fuel, as the Global Sulphur Cap comes into force, dictating the use of compliant fuel or abatement technologies.
With the deadline approaching fast, this issue is dominating discussion in the industry and this is why the Sulphur Cap 2020 Conference in Amsterdam will reflect this by taking the Global Sulphur Cap as its theme, examining all the key issues facing shipping through the lens of the Sulphur Cap.'

Marine Services and Small Vessel Sector (MSSVS) has established the Marine Procurement Modernization Working Group, with members from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) and Department of National Defence (DND). |
