The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority released the 2019 mid-year cargo statistics for goods and passengers moving through the Port of Vancouver. Between January 1 and June 30, 2019, overall cargo through the port increased 0.5% to a record 72.5 million metric tonnes (MMT) over the same time last year, with new mid-year records in containers, potash, grain and cruise passengers. Despite substantial excess LNG import capacity, Europe is investing in new LNG terminals as it looks to phase out coal-fired plants and nuclear power in favour of renewable energy and gas. Germany, Europe’s largest gas importer, has shifted its policy and plans to import LNG directly, diversifying its energy sources and strengthening its energy security. Read more

UNCTAD has released its liner shipping connectivity index (LSCI) for 2019, showing China retains its lead as the country best connected to others by sea, the index shows. The country’s LSCI has increased by 51% since 2006. At the other end, small islands developing states have hardly seen any improvement, and trade in shipped goods remains problematic.
